Canoe/kayak  slalom is an Olympic sport well established in Australia with Western Australia producing National, Olympic and World Champions. It involves paddling, fun, adrenalin, skill, fitness, strength, risk-analysis, an ability to swim in flowing water and problem-solving skills.

In canoe/kayak slalom competitions each athlete completes two runs of the course on a route passing through up to 20 gates suspended over the river. The competitions are against the clock and the result of each round is obtained by adding the time taken to paddle the complete course, in seconds, and adding the penalties awarded at each gate by a judge. Penalties are given for touching the poles (2 seconds), missing a gate (50 seconds) or a variety of other infringements. A paddlers best run, of two, is taken as their final score in all classes. Slalom Racing competitions are conducted under International Canoe Federation Slalom Racing Competition Rules applicable to international competitions , except to the extent that they are varied by the Australian Canoeing (AC) Competition Rules, the Canoeing Competitions Bylaw and by other AC Bylaws.
